[Review] Mobile Legends: Bang bang
So recently I have been (unhealthily) hooked on mobile game Mobile Legends: Bang bang (MLBB). It is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) that harks back to my days of playing Defense of the Ancients (DotA), even though it is more commonly compared to the newer League of Legends (LoL) on PC. Since I've never played LoL, my review will be mainly based on comparison with my limited exposure to DotA.
Generally for MOBA games like DotA, players had to memorize the items' effect as well as the recipe as you do not have the luxury of time to browse and read the individual item descriptions while in the game. In addition, advanced techniques such as last hitting, denying, and animation cancelling all have a strong impact on the outcome of the game, which makes it not so friendly for a noob like me. :p
What I love about MLBB is that players can customize the recommended items for each hero ahead of battle so I can take my time to read and optimize the items and sequence of obtaining them before entering battle. Also, items can be bought automatically once enough gold has been obtained without having to visit the item shop, which was confusing for me in DotA as certain items are only available at certain shops. Of course, learning the different items as well as their respective recipes will still give advanced players an edge in customizing their chosen hero during battle in response to the enemy team composition but for novices like me, following the pre-planned item list is usually good enough.
In addition, MLBB was designed from the start as a mobile game so heroes and items are balanced to make each game last between 10 to 30 minutes, which again was a huge advantage over DotA games which can drag between 45 minutes to two hours if the game becomes a lengthy tug-of-war. The Brawl mode is even faster as it reduced the typical three lanes to one for constant team clash, usually lasting between five to ten minutes for me.
While players from both iOS and Android camp can play together on the same server, accounts cannot be moved between platforms even if you use third party account binding such as Facebook or VK. So choose your starting platform carefully unless you don't mind starting over when switching.
All in all, Mobile Legends: Bang bang is a highly recommended game, even for traditional MOBA challenged folks like me.
