Clash of Clans: Starting tips

Just started playing Clash of Clans after having been bugged by friends to join in their clans. Here's a few starter tips gleaned from around the web and through my own experience to hopefully help you gain a better start in the game.

  1. Gems are precious commodities. Try not to waste gems rushing your base, not even during the tutorial. Don't worry, the goblins won't attack your base during the tutorial until your tower is completed.
  2. Use the initial 3 days shield to your advantage. Since most of the initial upgrades takes only a short while, try to start your game during the period of day when you have most time to play actively.
  3. Plan your mines and storage upgrades. You'll soon more resources to upgrade the various buildings. The last thing you'll want to to be stuck waiting for resources while your mines are upgrading.
That's all for the time being. Hope this helps!

Updates:

So it's been almost two months since I started and I'm still playing this game. Truly addictive when you have friends playing together, discussing strategies, comparing bases, and fighting in clan wars. Some etiquette tips on joining clans:

  1. Don't ask for elder/co-leader. It gets irritating when people whine and plead to get elder/co-leader status and earns you a kick depending on how patient your clan leaders are.
  2. Participate in clan wars. That's what you joined a clan for right? Or at least part of the reason. Fighting in clan wars doesn't affect your village shield and earns you war bonuses if your clan wins so go ahead and do your best. Most active clans are pretty strict on this and will kick non-participating members.
  3. Read donation requests. Sure you're new and feeling eager to contribute in your fancy new clan but read the donation requests. A town hall 8 guy may not appreciate the level 2 goblins you just gave him when he's specifically looking for dragons or level 5 troops. If you find that your current troops don't match up to the requested donations, check with your clan leader if it's okay to not donate anything. Decent clans usually won't mind lower level members sticking around and growing with them.
